MotoGOAT allows you to make predictions for each race in the MotoGP world championship. Once the actual race has finished, points will be awarded based on how accurate your prediction was. You can compare your scores to other players or start your own league with a select group of players.

Making a prediction is easy

MotoGOAT allows you to make three different types of prediction: a race top 10 prediction, a sprint race podium prediction and a championship winner prediction. The race and sprint race predictions are made for each individual race, while the championship prediction is made for the entire championship. You can switch between the three different predictions using the tabs at the top of the prediction.

Race prediction

The Race tab will show your prediction for the upcoming race. If you haven't made a prediction for the race yet, MotoGOAT will store a default prediction for you.

The prediction list is separated in two parts by a white border. Ten riders will be above it and the rest will appear below it. MotoGOAT asks you only to predict the top 10 of riders for the race. Any rider outside your top 10 won't score you any points. You can drag riders from below the white border into your top 10 or vice versa, but there will always be 10 riders in your top 10. Your prediction will automatically be stored as you make changes to the order of riders in your top 10.

At the top of the prediction, you will find a countdown timer to either the start of the upcoming Q1 (qualifying) session, to the sprint race or to the start of the full race. While the timer is counting down to Q1, you can freely make adjustments to your prediction without penalty. Once the qualifying session has started, however, making changes is still possible, but is done at the cost of a penalty. This is done so that players are still able to make predictions after qualifying was done, but the results of the qualifying session will give additional information which may lead to more accurate predictions.
Any change made after Q1 has started will cause the rider that was dragged up or down to be penalized with a 25% reduction in points. This penalty is indicated with a "finish" flag icon: finish icon. You will be warned about making changes after Q1 has started, but this warning can be disabled by going into your user profile and deselecting the "Confirm prediction changes after qualifying has started" option.
If you wish to rank your scores without any form of penalty, or include more (or less) than 10 riders in your prediction, you can do so by creating or joining a group and configuring the group according to your desires. See the chapter Groups for more information about groups.

Sprint race prediction

The prediction for the sprint race is done on the Sprint tab. On this tab you will find all riders for the upcoming race listed in alphabetical order. The goal of the sprint race is to predict which three riders will finish on the podium in the sprint race. You can select up to three riders which you think will finish on the podium. For each of the three riders that did end up on the podium (regardless of their position on the podium) you will score 10 points. At the end of the race weekend, these points will be added to your points total for that weekend's event.

Championship prediction

On the Championship tab you can select a single rider which you expect to be the winner of this year's world championship. At any point during the championship you can make this prediction or change your existing prediction. Changing an existing prediction isn't without cost, however, because the earlier a (correct) prediction is made, the more points will be awarded for it. Once the MotoGP championship winner is officially known (when mathematically only one rider can claim the title), MotoGOAT will lock each championship prediction and award points to every player that has correctly predicted the winner. Each player will be awarded 5 points for each race that was completed after the player made their prediction. The points are added to the player's season total score. When a player scored bonus points through a correct championship prediction, a icon will be shown next to the player's score.

Each rider in your top 10 will award you a number of points based on the difference between your predicted position and the rider's actual finishing prediction. The scores are based on the official MotoGP scoring system:
25, 20, 16, 13, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

The maximum number of points a rider can score depends on the predicted position, meaning your #1 predicted rider will score a maximum of 25 points, your #2 predicted rider will score a maximum of 20 points, #3 will score a maximum of 16 points, etc. Below you'll see a listing of the maximum scores for each predicted position:

The actual score a prediction will earn you is based on the difference between the predicted position and the rider's actual finishing position.
For example, if you predicted a rider to finish 1st, but that rider ended up finishing third (a difference of 2), you will earn 16 points.
If you predicted a rider to finish 5th, but that rider ended up finishing 7th (also a difference of 2) you will earn 9 points.
A rider that was predicted in 4th position who finished 1st (a difference of 3) will also score 9 points.
When a rider finishes exactly on the predicted position, the rider will score max points for that position.

Note that any rider that was changed after the qualifying session for the race has started will be penalized by having a 25% reduction in score (rounded down). With this system, a perfect prediction (where your predicted top 10 exactly matches the race's outcome) will score 125 points.

Entering race result data is still partially a manual job. This means that race results will not be available immediately after a race has finished. We are doing our utmost best to enter race results as soon as possible and our aim is to do so within 24 hours after the race has finished.

Comparing results

If you go to the results page, you can see your predictions for previous races and the results of your prediction. The table to the right will show the real result of the race (note: this data is based on the data from the motogp.com website. Other sources providing conflicting results will be ignored). The table on the left-hand side shows your top 10 prediction. The pos column shows the real world finish position for that rider, with the difference between the race result and your prediction displayed between brackets. An arrow up means the rider finished in front of your predicted position and an arrow down means the rider finished behind your predicted position. If there is no value displayed between brackets, then that means your predicted position exactly matched the race finish position for that rider. Any rider in your prediction that failed to start the race will be listed as "dns" (did not start) and net you 0 points. The score column will display the number of points that prediction has earned you. With the selection boxes above the tables, you can select a season and a race for which you want to see the prediction results.

Below the race prediction result there's a small table showing your sprint race prediction. Each rider that did end up finishing on the podium will have a icon next to the score. A rider that did not finish on the podium has a icon.

While signing up, you were asked if you wanted to participate in public rankings or not. If you opted in to this feature, you will be able to see the scores of other players and other players will be able to see your scores. You can view and compare the scores of all players on the rankings page. On this page, you can select a season and a race to see how many points each player paticipating in MotoGOAT has scored, and where that ranks them among all the other players. You can use the search box at the top right of the table to find a specific player by name or score. It is also possible to select "entire season" instead of a single race, which will show the scores and associated rankings for the entire season.

The rankings page shows total scores for either the selected race weekend or the entire championship. To see how this score is built up out of the race prediction, sprint prediction and championship prediction (for season scores), click or tap the score.

Badges

When playing MotoGOAT, various types of badges can be earned. There are four types of badges:

  • 2022 The gold badge is awarded to every season winner. The season winner is the person who has scored the most points throughout the entire season. The year number indicates for which season this badge was awarded. Click the badge to view the rankings for that season.
  • NED The silver badge is awarded to every race winner. A race winner is the person who has scored the most points for that specific race. If multiple people end up with the same top score, all of them receive the badge. The three letters indicate for which race the badge was awarded. Hover your mouse cursor over the badge to see the season as well. Click the badge to view the rankings for that race.
  • NED The bronze badge with a three-letter race inicator is awarded to the person that made the highest scoring prediction within a season. Before the 2023 season this only included points scored for the Sunday race. After the introduction of sprint races in 2023, this includes points of both the Sunday race and the sprint race. The three letters indicate for which race the badge was awarded. Hover your mouse cursor over the badge to see the season as well. Click the badge to view the rankings for that race.
  • 2023 The bronze badge with a year indicator is awarded to the person that scored the most points in all of the season's sprint races only. This badge is only awarded from 2023 onward. The year number indicates for which season the badge was awarded. Click the badge to view the rankings for that season.

Groups

On the groups page you will see a list of the groups you are a member of. Select a group to see the rankings of just the members of that group. Note that if you opted out of public rankings, your score and ranking within a group will still be visible to all members of that group. This means that if you join a public group, in theory every player on the site can see your display name and scores.
You cannot make predictions per group. You always make one prediction for a race and this will be shared across all groups.

To join an existing group, go to the Groups page. In the menu to the left, a new item will appear named Join a group. If you click it, you end up on a page where you can search for public groups or enter an access code to join a restricted group. Continue reading to learn about the difference between public, restricted and private groups.

Creating a group is easy. When the groups page is opened, a new menu item is available called Create new group. If you click it, you can enter a name for your group and the privacy level of the group. The name of your group must be unique; no two groups can have the same name.

There are three privacy levels available:

  • Public: This means anyone can join your group and it can be found on the Join a group page. There is no way to keep people out of your group.
  • Restricted: A restricted group won't show up on the Join a group page, so people cannot just join it. Instead, you can share a group specific "access code" with people who you'd like to be able to join. Other people can use this access code to join your group.
  • Private: This is the most private level. Nobody can join the group by themselves. You have to explicitly invite people in by entering their email address. Invited players will be notified through a message on the dashboard page (where predictions are made) that they have a pending invitation. They can either accept the invitation (and join the group) or decline it.
After you have created your group, you will automatically be taken to the group page. As the creator of the group, you are automatically also the admin for the group. Being an admin gives you the following options to control your group:
  • Invite people by entering their email address (this is possible for all privacy types, not just private).
  • If your group is a restricted group, you can display the group's access code in case you have forgotten it.
  • Remove a player from the group.
  • Make another player admin. A group can have multiple admins.
  • Delete the group. Be warned: this is irreversible.
  • Set the rules for the group:
    • By default, MotoGOAT will use every player's top 10 prediction to calculate scores. Within a group, however, you can override this default to use either the top 3, top 5, top 10, top 15, top 20 or all the predicted riders. Using a bigger selection of predicted riders allows players to score more points in the group, but forces them to consider the finishing position of more riders as well.
    • Enable or disable the penalties applied for making predictions after the Q1 (qualifying) session has started. Read more about this penalty in the Making a prediction section.
    • Enable or disable sprint races. When disabed, the group's scores ignore sprint race predictions and any points earned for those will not be added to the scores in the group.
    • Enable or disable championshp predictions. When disabed, the group's scores ignore championship winner predictions and any points earned for those will not be added to the scores in the group.
